The Institute of Bankers in Ireland was founded in 1898, and came into existence with just 719 members. The first President of the Institute was Charles Martin who was - at the same time - governor of the Bank of Ireland. From the very beginning, the Institute was dedicated to the professional development of its members - initiating formal examinations held each May - which resulted in the award of the Certificate of the Institute. Following the establishment of a cycle of lectures on banking issues, the Institute went on to found a quarterly journal in 1899 - the Journal of the Institute of Bankers in Ireland - which remains in existence as Banking Ireland.A book entitled "A Century of Banking: The Life and Times of The Institute of Bankers in Ireland 1898-1998" is available from the Institute.
