History Print
The Institute of Bankers in Ireland was founded in 1898, and came into existence with just 719 members. The first President of the Institute was Charles Martin who was - at the same time - governor of the Bank of Ireland. From the very beginning, the Institute was dedicated to the professional development of its members - initiating formal examinations held each May - which resulted in the award of the Certificate of the Institute. Following the establishment of a cycle of lectures on banking issues, the Institute went on to found a quarterly journal in 1899 - the Journal of the Institute of Bankers in Ireland - which remains in existence as Banking Ireland.

A book entitled "A Century of Banking: The Life and Times of The Institute of Bankers in Ireland 1898-1998" is available from the Institute.
